I think it's a fair assumption at least to a point. Unless you're desperate for a trophy, two players has to be better than one. And so on, though I agree a point will be reached where some players get turned off. That said, wouldn't everyone rather win a tournament with 400 players than with 4? I hope so.

As to growing tournaments, no idea. Were the added money much larger, it could make a difference by allowing TDs to lower the entry fee. If some sponsor added a million bucks and the tournament were free to enter, the attendee would be huuuuuuuge.
