Why aren't players required to check in with the Director prior to playing the match to pick up score sheets and report where they plan on playing?

Seems an easier solution to let the director direct and minimize player errors.

Not at all. That's micromanaging. I like to be a responsible player that actively seeks out my next match, avoids delays, promptly reports results, etc., as the director has enough responsibility to be going on with. I've never played to a wrong match length, and would be fine with accepting ANY penalty for doing so.

There should be a general idea that we should be actively punishing behavior (intentional or unintentional) that creates serious problems for directors. Yes, punish... create incentive (or disincentive) in the proper way, and people WILL change their behavior.
