In my opinion, any spectator should be able to alert players to a mistake in initial board setup; a missing cube is no different than a missing checker.

I think such spectators should NOTIFY THE DIRECTOR and let HIM correct such errors. It's wrong in all cases, IMO, for kibitzers to correct actions or inactions of the players. The director is much better equipped to decide what should and shouldn't be brought to the player's attention. There is no pre-set list of things a spectator is allowed to tell a player; that list should remain at zero items.
