In the case of an incorrect starting position, or possibly a scorekeeping error, there is an obvious cost to delay in fixing the problem.

If the director is standing right there, sure, give him a nudge. But if I have to walk across the room, get the attention of a staffer, and take him over to the game in question, now the game has progressed for 10 moves from the incorrect starting position when it could have been corrected at the start. The director most likely says, "Sorry, since 3 moves have been made, the position has to stand." Well, that's not exactly superior to what would have happened if you had just spoken up.

Your general point is well-taken but Rich's point makes sense for more reasons than just "let's not bother the director."
