Real Backgammon

I agree with you - however I still appreciate all the work they are doing because it's an area I have largely neglected. I suspect a lot of BG players came from the Chess world and have more of an interest in openings. In Chess you can find plenty of guys who are fanatical about studying opening play and it does improve their ratings. On the other hand the same guys don't know a lot of basic technique and strategy and are weak players once the opening phase is over.
Playing the opening perfectly in backgammon could give some people an edge, like serving in tennis. The rolling out millions of times as you say does make me chuckle to myself especially when the results are so close on many plays.
After all the rolling is done maybe one day someone will write a definitive tome with all the opening plays and responses 3 deep and the reasons behind them, kind of like Ballard's book on 31 but with all openings! So perhaps posting on this forums is helping speed up that goal. Then the opening will be more or less a dead topic and it will be sad in a way, everyone playing the same style...
Still I'm in favor of seeing more real positions on a forum. But being Stick's forum, he is one of the opening pioneers isn't he? So it's natural this is where the openings are discussed.
