It's not a one-or-the-other proposition. Most of the time spent with opening rolls is actually spent by the computer, which leaves a lot of time for improving the rest of one's game. Opening rolls come up every game, so why not know how to play them? More importantly, if one takes the time to understand the why behind the moves, those same concepts come up throughout the game, so in working on your openings you are working on strengthening your entire game. For example, knowing why a play might change between standard play, GG, GS, and DMP provides insights into how to approach those situations in general. Finally openings are one of the few areas of the game that can be definitively understood, as each generation of bots comes closer to "solving" them. For someone like me, who will never be a giant of backgammon, it's nice to have an area that I feel I can master.
