Real Backgammon

A wise man once told me after winning a big tournament in Australia, most matches come down to a few key decisions and I agree with you Bill I don't like talking about error rates. In chess we have ratings according to results. If it were just error rates the highest rated player in the world would not necessarily be the best. There are some very strong grandmasters who make few errors but cannot beat the elite players, just get lots of draws and the occasional loss.
I saw an article in Bill Davis's magazine on how Petko won the recent masters final in Las Vegas after dropping a clear take that cost him 11% chances in the match. I'm guessing Petko knew it was a take, but he had rather lose the 4 points than put the match on the line in one game. At the end of the day he won, and I know everyone will say he loses more in the long run by dropping. His error rate just from that blunder must be high but clearly he is an extremely strong player who makes very few errors. The record books will forever read that Petko won and no one will give a damn if his opponent played with a lower error rate...
