Why not use markers?

How bad would it be to use pennies or some such as markers?

If a player wants to try out a play, he must put a marker on the edge of the board where checkers are moved from. If he does not want to try out the move, touch-move rules could apply.

When trying out a move, at the destination, a player should still leave a gap between the wall of the board or any existing checkers that are already there.

When the move is finalized, a player lifts the markers and moves the checkers down to their final positions.

One problem I can see right away is that the markers themselves might be misplaced just as easily as checkers!
