It's only to his detriment if something detrimental stemmed from it, which it didn't. In fact, since he was obviously oblivious to the time factor replaying the game from Point X alerted him to the time in which case he was sure never to time out now! He was breaking the rules, intentional or not. Knowingly or unknowingly I know there's a question of ethics in this particular situation but you break the rules there's normally a penalty. How many times has telling the cop you didn't know the speed limit went from 70 to 55 worked getting you out of a ticket?
