It is legal if you use the ABT (USBG) rules as written, but I agree it should not be allowed, and the dead cube rule be rewritten.

I think it is a reasonable rule. What it does is prevent players from "taking a shot" at getting a bad drop when the cube is already high enough for their opponent to win the match. Winning that way only leads to bad feelings.

There should be no hard feelings in the other type of dead cube situation where, if you double by accident when the cube is already high enough for you to win the match, you have only yourself to blame. Maybe this type of dead cube should be prevented too, but that is not nearly as important.
