The problem here is that Pat thinks parents don't get to decide what's best for their children. You and he seem to agree that it's OK for kids to play BG for fun but not for money.

But suppose other nannies decide that kids shouldn't play backgammon AT ALL. Are you willing to agree with his premise that they, not you, know what's best for your children? Don't you think they'd need a better reason than that slavery used to be legal -- if for no other reason than that slavery was, you know, a bigger crime against humanity than kids playing backgammon for a little prize?

I am not advocating 5-year-olds be allowed to enter $1,000 tournaments. But I do think a 17-year-old can handle a $5 jackpot. I see them in Starbucks all the time spending that on a coffee drink I can't pronounce. There needs to be a balance.
