I wagered on EVERYTHING when I was a kid. Including backgammon...but I wasn't much of a backgammon player and only played a little for money with one friend who was also learning the game. It was after I became an avid Bridge Player and got friendly with Oswald Jacoby, and he started teaching me bacgkammon, that I got involved in that game for money.

But what difference does it make? EVERYONE I knew played cards, mostly poker and blackjack and gin for money! That was the culture I grew up in, first on the South Side of Chicago and then in the ritzy Highland Park, Texas neighborhood. (Our high school team won State two of three years I was there, and the year they lost it was rumored that several key players on the team had big bets on the opposition and threw the game, and I'm fairly sure that was true.)
