I agree with nearly everything you say. I don’t think these specialist tournaments are any real threat to normal backgammon action normally, because they are generally very small and full of the same types of players who which to earn a mastership award as quickly and effectively as possible without the inevitable stop-start of individual attempts. Apart from high-profile versions they are more akin to applicants sitting an exam for a higher diploma, degree, or professional exam, hoping to achieve the desired qualification. When the exam is finished the players they can enjoy the thrill of luck like anyone else.
