When a couple of gamblers hook up, how often do they say, “Let’s bet on chess!” Of course, the answer is never. To use Tim’s phrase, chess is a game of skill. It is not a gambling game.

Tim is asking whether attitudes about backgammon are shifting towards the chess model. Is backgammon today more often pursued for the reasons chess is played than it was in the past? Is the perception that backgammon is a game of skill (in the way that chess is) on the rise?
