Backgammon more of a "game of skill" now than in the past?

Either of us could define another metric which includes games completely away from tournaments (national or local). To me these would be complicated by the fact that some 'casual' players aren't even aware that skill is a component!
Have the pure money players (e.g. at country clubs) changed their actions in recent years? Do they use bots? Do they care that these new tools exist? How would they even know?
The cutting edge of backgammon is more associated with websites like this one (whose posters are dominated by tournament players). It's not a given that what goes on at large tournaments drives what happens with the game overall, but in my experience the trickle down effect is present in other games, so why not BG?
