Hi Nack,

I appreciate a reply from Mr Reply. (-:

> define which moves you are going to allow for the "openers"

Same as Jeremy's (since I tried to simplify his work), which is

21$, 21S, 31P, 41$, 41S, 51$, 51S, 61P, 32D, 32S, 32Z, 42P, 52D, 52S, 62$, 62R, 62S, 43D, 43S, 43U, 43Z, 53P, 63R, 63S, 54D, 54S, 64P, 64R, 64S, 65R

So in comparison with your 0.02 maximum error list it also includes 62$, 62R, and 43U.

> I would not include the larger errors of 62R and 62$ [...] 43U

I agree that they are rarely seen, but today I encountered an almost complete novice who came up with "$" when asked about the best move with 62. I had expected "R" instead. (-:

> virtually never see 43S, 32Z

I see 43S frequently, 32Z is rarely seen (I sometimes play it for the surprise).

> define your set, whatever it is

True enough, done by Jeremy in my case. But I will think about restricting it further when publishing a cheat sheet or an article about it. Thanks for reminding me.

> it's a mistake to use as lax a standard for openers as you would on replies

Sure, which is what I did. I agree that openers are trivial. My point is that for beginners it might be easier to memorize a non-perfect set of openers that works better for embedding the reply rules (like I tried). Personally, I usually play the D or $ variants to elicit errors from weaker players (e.g. they will not slot against Down).

> I would also encourage you to add layers of strength

Yes, that was also Phil's point. Which is why I have staggered sub-rules for non-doublets. Of course, a well laid-out article will show things clearer than a mere ASCII posting.

> never got around to formalizing rules

Which is not so easy. For example, many intermediates will correctly play 41$-64R or 51$-64R, but in a general "algorithmic" framework it requires a separate rule, since usually you will play from the mid-point after hitting from somewhere else.

Thanks for your thoughts and best regards!

Axel
