Why not modify the Crawford Rule to always kill the cube when the leader is 1 away?

Because it would be unfair to the trailer. If you're playing a 9 point match and have the best of it early on and manage to win two doubled gammons to go up 8-0 would it be fair to your opponent, that if the tide now turns his way, that he can't use the cube at all?

Also I would have to learn a new MET.

I do agree with Chris' suggestion to disallow "pointless" doubles also at 1-away.
