In Response To: Tournament Rules and Guidelines (Michael Crane)

Thanks for having an open mind about this. The dice on the checker is an optional recommendation, and I am sure people will initially not like this rule until they have tried it. We tried it at a recent tournament that Rory ran, and we all found it to be a great way to play...especially with those sets with flat, thin checkers and with players who are always rolling too hard.

Have you ever played craps? They have no problem counting rolls that have a cocked die...they just determine if one side is clearly dominant. I am not saying we should go that far, but even with dimpled (spanish) checkers and even when the dice is tilted on top of the checkers, there is seldom any question determining what the roll is, so why waste time rolling over? And it's not just about time...it's just not fun watching a guy roll three or four times before we finally have a legal roll.

Before you decide, please play a match or two with this rule and you will see that it does not create the kind of problems you are worried about.

HOWEVER, if you don't like it, don't use it, but don't throw out the rest of the Guide and all the other good stuff we have added.....we did hardly anything with the actual rules, but did a lot to make their application and meaning clearer, and we added guidelines for behavior and responsibility for players, spectators and directors. That's what has been sorely lacking in the past.
