How many Americans are confident using centimeters as a measurement now? Is it all just inches, feet and yards, or is centimeters and meters common? Would it be imaginable to state a measurement in centimeters in a rulebook?
While Daniel is right that full metric conversion is a long way off, most Americans can deal with metric values. Skis and snowboards are measured in cm and mm. Bottled water and soda comes in 1/2, 1, and 2 liter bottles. Wine and liquor come in 750 ml bottles. Everybody who drives an imported car deals with metric values.
I would expect that tournament backgammon players in the US would have no trouble understanding a rule stated in centimeters. It's not like stating it in microfurlongs or centismoots.
