The whole point of your argument is that touch rule would make backgammon too hard, correct?
It's not a matter of making backgammon easier or harder. It's that touch move would make backgammon a less enjoyable experience. Even among players who are not in the habit of trying out different possibilities, I think touch move would put a damper on the game.
You'd always be worried that you might start with a move that turns out to force a terrible play. Consequently, players would slow down, even with fairly obvious plays, so as not to fall into this trap. Matches would take longer, people would get into more time trouble, and the experience would be less enjoyable.
Do you favor other rules to make backgammon easier; for example being allowed to use paper and pencil ...?
This would be an interesting rule to try. It would make it easier to do pip counts and match equity calculations, which would make the game more interesting I think. And perhaps open up possibilities for other types of calculations. It would add a new dimension to the game.
