I accede to your points. However, as a Chess game progresses, it becomes less cluttered - as pieces are taken for example. As a Backgammon game progresses it typically becomes more cluttered, as more checkers are slung around the board, and the position diversifies. This also happens in chess, but with an ever reducing number of pieces in play.

I also failed to mention that when you are mentally moving the BG checkers around, you may be hitting blots as part of that process, which adds another twist to it.
