Here's something we can agree on, can't we?

Okay, for those of you who hate legal moves and who feel the game should be played by the book, and if someone makes an error, T.S., can we at least agree that this is not the way the rules should be for beginners and intermediates?

Now, I don't mean to belittle intermediates in any way, but it is certainly true that intermediates are generally not as experienced, more likely to make innocent mistakes, more likely to get upset and angry at both themselves and their opponents if they lose a game or an important position because of a slip of the hand, and, because they are playing for a lot less money and are there more for "fun" than strictly competition than most open players, they want to have an enjoyable experience, and it's more about the fun of playing than just trying to win. Isn't it also true that if the game is less "friendly" they are less likely to come back if they walk away with a bad feeling?

So even if you are a staunch believe in NLM, can't you possibly "compromise" and see that this is a nicer way to play for lower levels of play? Isn't this "better" for the game than making relatively less-experienced players play to very strict standards and be forced to enforce them on each other?

Now, I have heard Bill and others argue that if you want to play LM and your opponent does, you can. That's nice for those of us who agree, but not everyone does, and then we have people playing with different approaches at different tables, and it only changes that one part of the game...it doesn't change the overall approach to the game that we are there to win, but good sportsmanship prevails, and the only way we are supposed to take advantage of our opponents is by playing better and rolling better, not by sticking them on technicalities.

World-wide, people are asking for a kinder and friendlier game, and thanks to so many TD's and Federations around the world that agree, it is happening. Finally! But if you won't change, at least compromise for the lower divisions.
