No one is ever forced to play NLM. In a NLM tournament, players are free to agree to LM. When you teach new players backgammon, just let them know they can choose to play LM or NLM -- at any level of competition. Those who prefer LM can play LM and those who prefer NLM can play NLM. Problem solved.
