With regard to the unfortunate situation of the Last Chance registration I'd suggest two things:

1) Upon registration, each player is given a simple half-sheet 'Welcome' document with a few helpful reminders that people are apt to forget, and told that they are responsible for reading it:

- Reminder of registration requirement for Last chance

- Reminder of 15% discount of Hotel dining for4 BG players

- Reminider of special $20 parking rate for Hotel BG guests

. . . and any other useful / important info -- perhaps the names / Cell #'s of the TD and assistants, for instance. But not too much info, or the important things get buried.

2) Crucial, likely-to-be-missed info like the registration requirement or any change in the usual routine should be written with a red sharpie on the relevant Draw Sheets. Every single player looks at the draw sheets repeatedly if not obsessively, while not every person is in the room or paying attention for verbal announcements. (a classic 'synchronous' vs 'asynchronous' communication issue).

The drama of the USA VS World event could also have been considerably heightened by having an easel display entirely devoted to it, perhaps out by the streaming screen, with a chart of the various events and results getting filled in over the course of the tournament -- and of course a big sign announcing the Time and Starting Score of the Final.
