In Response To: Allaying concerns about dice hacking. (Timothy Chow)

If the method you outline here can be carried out in a relatively quick and seamless manner, which I think could be arranged with simple programming, with those random-number lists put on inexpensive USB drives that the TD would be free to examine at any time, you could probably convince most people that it is safe and effective.

Even if it took a few minutes at the start of a match to get this procedure set up and running, the time would be more than made up by shortening the mechanical process of dice-rolling, picking up and shaking etc. Players and TDs would all realize this after just a few matches.

Eventually, some procedure along these lines would become the gold standard, and organizations such as USBGF, the European outfits, and top-level players with CS degrees and experience would all endorse it. At that point, I think it would gain general acceptance as at least a permissible alternative to current SOP.

One advantage we found in chouette when using the electronic dice machine one of the players built, was that its large red LED display was easily visible to everyone. That meant no need for outside players jockeying around trying to see the roll, or having to ask what it was. But would other people in other places trust such a device for their own chouette? Hmmm...it might depend on who brought the thing. If they used to lose regularly, then start winning a lot, they might find it wrapped around their ears some night >>
