Error Rates

In Response To: Error Rates (Stick)

Geez a whole section on something that is obviously, at best, only the second most important evaluator of skill.

Won and Lost percentage beats it hands down. Stick Won 10 and lost 3 in Vegas in the matches that counted. I think he lost first round, bought back lost again then won 7 straight... Entered round of 16 in SJP won 3 lost 1. If I am wrong here, he was 10 W, 2 L, cuz he didn't buy back.

I am sure it had a lot to do with his 2-4 Snowie Equivalent Error Rate...

But you can make a double that is a blunder and if your opponent drops it, who cares if your ER went up to 6 because of that double? Ridiculous. People have long postulated that they ought to get bonus points instead of dings then. At times like that the only thing that the technically correct play according to the bot becomes is the answer to a trivia question, and this is not trivial pursuit!

I went 6-4 in Vegas, losing in SJP round 1 to Munitz but avenging that defeat in round 3 of the Main flight. I had also bought back due to a loss and lost to Kaneko in round 4. Then won until I met Stick in the final, and lost again. So I had 3 losses in the Open and one in the SJP.

As for excuses: Tired is never one of em for me. I declined two offers to play doubles in Vegas because it is such a marathon there. Better to save energy. I travel to ABT events on Thursdays, so i can get some sleep. Drove into Vegas on Tuesday, same reason. Played and tried to qualify in the blitz, but learned long ago that you don't want to qualify twice in that thing! (Diminishing returns), I lost to the eventual winner of the event in the final of a qualifying bracket of 8, and promptly stopped trying to qualify altogether. I took two shots, that was enough.

I have seen the bg junkies who go to a tournament and play all night. They don't usually make it to Sunday, though Tim Mabee did win two events last year.

Get your rest, don't get hammered in the bar, don't bring your gf to backgammon tournaments, don't go to the casinos or strip joints with the guys.

Study at home, bring A game, and fuck a bunch of error rates. I do my best winning at 5 or 6 because I push people around with my "bad" cubes.

Neil used to never even play in the masters, he rested up for the ABT event. How did he do? Think he has the lowest ER, or just the best WL %?
