I found this a most interesting story and very true. But I have another way of distinguishing a professional from a gambler(fish). A professional is the one who is the best player in the game, or at least one of the best players in the game, and he has strong odds in his favor. A gambler (fish) is everyone else in the game.

More directly relating to backgammon, there are only a few players in the world who qualify as professionals by your father's definition. I don't pretend to know everything there is about backgammon, but I do know when I am outclassed and when I am not, and that qualifies me, in my opinion, as a professional, or at least as not a gambler or a fish.
