Geez a whole section on something that is obviously, at best, only the second most important evaluator of skill.
There's a difference between "skill" and "performance". The only measure of performance is your W-L record. One pretty good measure of skill is your ER, but it's not the end all be all.
This is like in baseball, where peripheral statistics like WHIP and OPS and ERA+ and VORP and all that mumbo jumbo can help measure whether a player is any good. In the end, the only statistic that matters is whether the team wins or loses. Your measurable skills can help you to predict whether or not your team wins or loses.
In BG, ER is like all those sabermetric stats in baseball. They're excellent predictors of performance. As Coolrey rightly points out, they can't ever show the whole picture, because there are many many times when you make a suboptimal-ER play for a larger goal.
