In my experience what matters is not whether I think I'm playing on for the gammon, but whether my opponent thinks I'm playing on for the gammon. If my opponent thinks I'm playing on for the gammon then he/she will tend to drop the cube. But if my opponent thinks I'm playing on because I'm not good enough then I'll often get improper takes.

Even players I think I know pretty well will sometimes surprise me with how grossly they misevaluate certain positions. I'll be playing a blitz or a priming game and will finally decide to risk a double that I know is technically wrong by 0.100, only to find that my opponent was ready to drop two rolls ago.
