I think the problem would be rare in both games, but rarer in chess, because the biomechanics of picking up a chess piece differ substantially from those of backgammon. Chess pieces have a much more pronounced three-dimensional quality, and given the way the human eye and its corresponding cranial neurons work, I suspect that matters quite a bit. We'd see the problem more often in chess if people played chess tournaments using the kind of magnetic travel sets that have flat, round pieces distinguished from one another only by their markings. There's good reason such chess sets are extremely unpopular, aside from the fact they are ugly.
