Cheating, when the only benefit is to enhance reputation is much less likely than cheating when there is something of great monetary value at stake.

I don't put highly skilled, competitive backgammon players in the same pool as the general populous. From my experience, I think there are very, very few backgammon players that are highly skilled that would resort to cheating, even if they were 100% sure of not being caught. Most skillful players want validation for their hard work and cheating does not give them the respect they value most-self respect.
