Should Major Tournament Events be Allowed to be 'Resolved' by Agreement Rather than by Play?

My response is definitely "NO". I think it damages the game.
I am interested in the opinions of others.
Disregarding, for the purposes of this discussion, the complications associated with calcuttas and side pools, and disregarding the potential of illness and/or travel arrangement problems, should the two finalists of an ABT Championship event, an ABT Masters event, a USBGF National Championship event, or an equivalent major international event be allowed, without playing, to declare one the winner -- with trophy and, as applicable, ABT point consequences -- and to divide the prize money as they see fit?
Certainly, hedging -- w/o impact to others -- is, in my opinion, the business of the playing parties; however, I think it important that events be played to their conclusion. I think it a matter of principle associated with the integrity of the tournament and of the game of backgammon that all matches should be fairly contested to their conclusion. I think it also a matter of respect toward all participants, the tournament, the game, the directors, and others that such not be allowed.
What do others think?
