Stick, I suppose whether keeping a running score is required depends on what the definition of shall shall be? The word has a fuzzy history, and can express the mandatory or express the future tense, express the imperative or express a wish, but in a legal context (like a rules set) I tend to take "shall" to mean "is/are required to," unless context indicates that another definition makes more sense. So I'm with Jason here, that players "are required to" keep a running match score and compare it ..." I take the second sentence of the rule as merely warning that a player who doesn't follow the rule may suffer adversely in the case of a dispute. I don't take it to mean that a player can (or should, or is allowed to) opt out of the requirement as long as he's willing to take that risk.
