Nothing Is Owed to a Calcutta Buyer

Calcutta purchasers are buying an outcome, not the right to dictate how that outcome is achieved. MCG gave a good explanation of this. Here is another example:

In his semifinal match of the Liberty Cup Masters, Bill Phipps chose to overlook the clock error made by his opponent Sasha Bennett. With a checker on the bar, Sasha failed to notice that Bill had opened a point in his closed board. When Sasha punched the clock, instead of rolling, Bill did the same.

Some have argued that tournament backgammon is improved by dropping this sort of civility. Had there been side bettors, or if this had occurred in an Caclutta event, Bill would have deprived them of some of their winning chances.

This thinking is wrong. When you place a side bet on a player, you are buying his ethical choices along with any other choice he might make. In the extreme, this includes a decision to forfeit.
