Phil: I believe that if you are playing a player of equal ability to your own, trying to make the best, technical play is synonymous with trying to win. But when you are playing someone who is better or worse than you, or someone with tendencies or flaws that you can and should exploit, then you have conflicting goals.

Its somewhat odd, as I agree with this theory, however, in practice, the very best technical teachers all say the same thing: Play the best backgammon you can, do not try and find weaknesses to exploit. Just play the best game you can.

So, this flies directly in opposition to the theory.

Also, in the Dual Duel format, the players are most likely to be closely matched anyway, so unless you get a Fogerlund type backgame situation, as he detailed in his PrimeTime magazine article, then both players will be playing to be as close to perfect as they can be.
