I don't think this is the best way to do it

The amount of equity sacrificed doesn't have to be tiny. Particularly in cube actions, a bad pass in a position that you know looks scary to take to a weak player can often produce a 0.3 or 0.4 blunder pass, and cubing early by 0.1 can often produce a favourable enough MWC% risk/reward ratio (in matchplay, the ratio is calculated using MWC%, not emg) such that you only need, say, 1 in 5 or 1 in 6 wrong passes to make the double good. It is quite a bit harder to do this for checkerplay, but will happen occasionally - e.g. making one checkerplay blunder by reverting to a backgame earlier than normal against very weak opponents who will usually mess up the defense to the point of making multiple blunders in the ensuing long backgame, even though you know you are likely to lose some extra equity yourself in the process (you just attempt to lose less than your opponent). I probably do it more often than most strong players though, because I frequently play players rated hundreds of points lower than me (that is not meant to be a criticism of others who prefer not to), so I tend to get more opportunities to do it. It is also the case that players make 'adjustments' without even realising it, because the same types of mistakes are made systematically by most players, so one's own style of play will have automatically developed to reflect those common opponent styles that contain the systematic mistakes. So we all make deviating adjustments more than we consciously think we do.
