When you sign up to play in a tournament you are implicitly agreeing to take the tournament seriously and try to win. If your goals are different than this, you are not abiding by that promise.
Is this really true? I agree that it would be poor sportsmanship to take a frivolous and disrespectful attitude towards the tournament. But what if my main goal is to have fun? Suppose I make a good faith effort to play reasonably well but I don't exert myself to the fullest because taking an overly competitive attitude would ruin the event for me. Are you saying that I'd be guilty of an ethical violation? That makes no sense to me.
Similarly, if I play to minimize my PR, whether to join Mochy's club or because that's what I enjoy doing, I don't see the problem.
Finally, your logic would seem to demand that I exploit all the crazy rules about irregularities to my maximum advantage. My impression is that the consensus is that such an attitude actually leads to poor sportsmanship.
