I used to play semi-professional pingpong when I was young and I remember the standard system was double elimination where the winner of the fighters bracket got 2nd place, so there was no chance to win the tournament if you lose 1 match. Ironicaly, for entirely skill based games like pingpong I think a full double elimination is better, because it gives everyone a chance to prove he's the best at a tournament even after losing 1 match. In backgammon, winning a match or two doesn't really prove anything and that's why there is no good option for the final.
