Say first is N, 2nd is N/2 and third is N/4. If there is a tie for 2nd/3rd they should just split and get 3N/8.

To minimize incentives for collusion (I'm not sure that this is high priority in practice, but Sean raised the issue, so...), you want to make sure that B's equity after a loss in the semi-final against A does not depend on the result of the second semi-final. The easiest solution is that 2nd and 3rd place are never distinguished. That solution is particularly practical regarding the trophies: The TD knows exactly how many trophies of which kind to order before the tournament. In other regards, that solution might be perceived as unfair, as a reward for the 2nd place player for winning the semi-final seems natural. As the reward for 3rd place should be fixed, any extra reward for 2nd place should come from the one-loss-winner, as Sean wrote. You can think of it as the easy solution plus an enforced hedge of money and/or ABT points in the final, if there is one.
