Ohio State ABT Results/and a question

Depending upon the number of players in the event, sometimes the 2nd chance bracket winner has played 3 more matches than the 1st chance winner (as apparently was the case in Cleveland this past weekend).
I wonder if it's possible that the 2nd chance winner has played only one more match than the first chance winner. I doubt it but certainly am far from sure.
Your pointing out the W/L records after the 2nd chance winner beats the 1st chance winner in match one is a strong one.
There is one more (admittedly minor) argument. In NFL (and probably other sports) the tiebreaker to make/miss the playoffs, or to get a better seed in the playoffs is head-to-head results during the regular season. For the two match type final, the players enter match #2 with the 2nd chance winner having no worse than a 50-50 record and often a better record, head-to-head.
There is a potentially analogous situation at some (single elim + consolation) tournaments where 2nd place main gets paid equally to 1st consolation even though the latter has typically played (and won) two more matches. (Some promoters/directors give slightly larger prize to 1st consolation, likely for this reason.)
Swiss, anyone?
