OK, I'll do some math.

Let's say that all tournaments start paying out more places. Let's consider a typical larger than average ABT tournament. Maybe Chicago or LA with about 64 in the open. For your suggestion to result in a tripling to 192 in say ten years time there would need to be 128 players in those ten years who had

i) entered a tournament and lost in what would have been the cash round at some point in those ten years.

ii) would not have gotten a hedge which you say yourself is usually obtained.

iii) be a person who might potentially play in that tournament ten years later.

iv) have the entry fee back instead of nothing back be the deciding factor in the decision to attend.
