Your answer of "of course not" is not sensible to my question if the best players were playing other best players since as you wrote there was no control at all about the opponent. You didn't choose such matches purposefully but if players have a tendency to play other best players (I think this is likely) then it would actually be the case. If my conjecture about that is correct it invalidates your result that PR is not significant.
