"The best chance of survival, IMO, is to go in the direction that the game has already been going, which is to use error rate as a basis for rebuilding backgammon as a status game."

Boy, the 'Status' that comes along with being a top player in your imagined 'improved' worked of backgammon had better be pretty damn intense, with lots of added sponsor money because there won't be much else in the way of reward, since probably a good 75% of current tournament attendees will abandon the game and you'll be hosting the same little circle of players over and over again.

Or is it imagined that such a 'Status' version of backgammon would gain the kind of obsessive passion and aesthetic engagement inspired by chess, leading to a very broad boom in the game? Will developing Players savor the deep Beauty of sliding a checker 5/4 rather than 6/5 and reaping a crucial .004 toward match PR? Will there be books filled with these historic micro-triumphs? Will spectators gasp with delighted surprise when a player stacks a sixth checker on the mid and wait eagerly for the XG rollout to confirm that it was a stroke of micro-genius?

Why play a game at all? Why not just hold a quiz where each contestant is given identical challenges, removing another thick layer of chance? Then we could get rid of all those tumbling dice and clicking checkers too - make it a purely cerebral exercise. Tournaments will be even sexier than they are now -- it'll be the 70's all over again!

Be careful what you wish for.
