I'm not claiming that backgammon works very well as a status game. I just think that it works better as a status game than as a sucker game in today's environment.

Basically I don't think there is any plausible way forward for backgammon to become a "big" game again. The status route is just the best of a bad lot IMO. In particular, I'm highly skeptical that tinkering with the rules is going to accomplish anything.
