I understand the appeal of the bright-line test, which is why I don't feel particularly strongly about this ruling, despite my multiplicity of posts on the topic.

There are situations where a bright-line test leads to a particularly harsh result. One of those is where a roll gets cancelled because it happened a split-second before someone pushed the clock, in a situation where the other player's action was already binding and they had no choice but to hit the clock.

There is a school of thought that says if we have a bunch of bright-line rules with penalties that are draconian under certain circumstances, that's a good thing because people will learn to obey the rules and we will all be happier. I take the more pragmatic view that people are always going to be a little sloppy from time to time, and the punishment should fit the crime. But this is a philosophical disagreement when you get right down to it, so it's not surprising that we rarely reach a consensus.
