Thanks for your input and feedback Phil - I agree with some of the points you made.

One major thing I would disagree with though:

AFAIK there is not any directed and unified 'process' in place. I could find plenty of debate and a whole bunch of subjective opinions on this topic. However, I could find no other even vaguely scientific survey on this particular backgammon subject. Perhaps it is even one of the first..

I think it best to keep an open mind: try to finish gathering the data and collectively look at the results when they are published. In theory we should then be able to use this hard data to discern any 'fair' and logical insights (if indeed there are any to be found).
