Side Pools--New Ideas

What I have seen in this thread is talk of creating side pools that exclude players simply for playing too well. And some suggestion that we should even consider forcing them to be handicapped to help level the playing field.
This thread isn't about good players trying to squeeze extra out of the backgammon economy. It is about simple fairness and an understanding that we are engaged in healthy competition with each other. If Phil Simborg doesn’t like getting the worst of it, Phil Simborg should play better. I know some Giants who would happily sell him lessons.
Tournaments are structured with 3 skill levels. I think most top players understand the importance of having sections where people can develop their game against players of their own skill level. Beginner and Intermediate sections are good ways to support and promote the game. But the open section is supposed to be about backgammon being played at the highest level. It is competitive, and that is a very good thing. People like competition and want the chance to test themselves against the best. Anyone who thinks it is unfair that they are getting outplayed in the open section should strongly consider going back to Intermediate.
