This has been discussed time and again.

Distinguishing between illegal and impossible moves is a simple matter of stating that by definition certain actions involving the movement and placement of checkers are not condonable "illegal" plays that may be allowed to stand (in the absence of an "legal moves only" rule), but are instead noncondonable "impossible" plays, which must be corrected.

Since discussion of "illegal" versus "impossible" plays distinction dates at the least to the time Danny Kleinman was writing backgammon books, that is, two or more decades ago, I dispute Jason's assertion that "nobody has yet provided a clear, unambiguous definition of the difference."
