In Response To: three sides to every story/important clarifications (vidvis)

I'm a bit reluctant to comment much more because the thread seems to be getting a little ugly, and I'm not part of the tournament backgammon community. However, I do want to point out what seems to be a misinterpretation of what Jason said.

As I understood it, what Jason didn't like was that when Steen asked Victor, Victor claimed he had only said "good game" and shaken hands and gone for a break. Jason later (confusingly) described this action using terms such as "taking back a resignation" or "not keeping his word," but his essential objection seems to have been that Victor had, in the heat of the moment, believed that the match was over, but then later made it seem like he knew the match was not over and had just gotten up to take a break.

Did Victor actually believe that Jason had scored at least 11 points at the moment they shook hands and he got up? In Victor's post in this thread, he uses the phrase "my mistake," which sounds very much to me like a statement that when he shook hands, he mistakenly thought that the match was over. I can't think of any other plausible interpretation of the term "my mistake." The mistake could not plausibly have been "mistakenly thinking that he was allowed to resign the match when Jason had only 10 points"; that's not a mistake Victor would have made. Taking a break isn't a mistake. Saying "good game" to your opponent isn't a mistake. Victor admits he made a mistake of some sort, that he claims Jason tried to take advantage of; what other mistake could he be referring to other than mistakenly thinking that the match was over?

Did Victor actually claim that when he got up, he was just getting up to take a break? We currently have only Jason's word for that.

Anyway, I'm not going to offer any judgment of who behaved correctly or incorrectly, but I thought that this point was worth clearing up.
