Much of this thread -- I mean the part about "I'm just following the rules" -- would seem to make a very strong argument for the broad adoption of "Legal Moves" as a backgammon standard. If there's a strong prevailing sentiment, as there seems to be, that allowing your opponent to put himself on the bar is sleazy, why don't we make it the rule that this is not allowed, and bring the Rules into harmony with our moral Judgments?

Yes, it would lead to some rare occasions where a less honest player silently condones the quietly erroneous play of the honest man (though putting oneself on the bar wouldn't be among the likely anomalies). Moreover, in order for the honest player today to avoid 'losing equity' to "less noble" rule-stickling players is to be an asshole in these petty situations himself. Is it really worth having to agonize about what kind of an asshole you're willing to be in order to avoid these quieter moments of potential equity loss?

I'm fairly new to the wider world of tournament backgammon outside Boston, but I've been surprised to see how much rancor and ill-feeling there is surrounding these kinds of situations. And man, these seem to be stories no one ever forgets.

Albert
